John Hughes Tribute Show at Gallery 1988

Now that they posted all the info about the John Hughes Tribute show I thought I'd pass it along.
To my surprise they used my piece for the show's promo card! Most unfortunately I'm going to miss the show opening (in LA this friday) because I'm attending a book signing event in NYC. Some of my work I created while I was a student at Otis College of Art and Design (in the fashion program) is going to featured in a book about emerging fashion designers. I came a bit early to get some work done in the city and to catch up with my best friends who recently moved to NY. It's great to be back in the city and I feel like a kid seeing snow for the first time in a 5 years. Because I've lived in LA all my live I see/touch (real) snow every 4-6 years.
When I dropped off my piece before I left I got to see some of the other pieces and they all look great! So if your in LA this friday night and have plans, cancel them and go checkout the show! I don't know of anyone who has a pulse that doesn't love all of John Hughes films.

Insperation: Michael Cina for Ghostly International

'Michael Cina is an accomplished Creative Director that is currently leading the multi- disciplinary design studio, Michael Cina Associates. Michael is widely known for starting YouWorkForThem, a graphic design boutique, and it’s sister company, WeWorkForThem, an award-winning design studio. (1)His work is commissioned and constantly sought after by many of the Fortune 500 companies and has been featured in hundreds of publications. Ghostly International commissioned Michael Cina to work on an album cover for them in 2007. As time passed, we developed a great working relationship. Michael Cina Associates has helped them transcend how art and design can function, and in the end, have created objects of desire.
I love his work and am in awe of his diverse portfolio!
At some point in my life I hope I'm able to catch one of his talks.

Preview! : John Hughes Tribute Show at Gallery 1988 (in LA)

2011 is off to a great start and I have some new work I'm going to post very soon!!
My goals for 2011 didn't quite solidify until a few weeks in. I recently found and have chosen a path that will lead me into 2012. So 2011 is all about work-work-work and I couldn't be happier.

Next month I'm going to be in a group show honoring John Hughes at Gallery 1988 (in LA). I'll post all the info about the show once it's released but for now I wanted to give you a quick preview. This was the first piece I 'documented' through out my creative process.
The art show is honoring John Hughes and all his iconic films(such as Pretty in Pink,Weird Science, Home Alone, Ferris Beuller's Day Off and the Breakfast Club). For the show I decided to do a portrait of the lovely Molly Ringwald.
I wanted to incorporate some ink in this piece so once I laid down my red/pink wash, I found a good photo of her gorgeous face, pulled out my black pens and got to work. I tend to be really selective about the images I use as a reference and take into consideration everything from the angle of the eyes, the lighting to whether or not it's a personal challenge for me (to try to recreate). I love a good challenge. For me, portraits are defiantly a personal challenge and can be a bit terrifying. I can barely breath when I'm fist getting started. When I love the wash (of color) I'm working with I never take the placement of the face/image (on top of the wash) into consideration. It's purely luck when the ink wash flows with the face/image. I hate planning out a piece. I love watching it evolve as I go along.

I'll post the completed piece in the next week or so, so stay tuned!

One of my favorite (artist) moments: A storyboard artist on a job(in the works) reached out to ask if was also the illustrator Nicole Guice and that he like my work. "because as an illustrator I was familiar with your work which I like a lot. It has a very nice "feel", but i didn't know you're into modeling and acting." Made my month.

Best moment/s: seeing my siblings and best friends careers bloom. I'm sooo proud of them, admire their beauty inside and out and inspired by their many talents. I'm very lucky to have them in my life.

Christmas Gifts!

I hope you and yours had a most marvvvelous ou-liday! I did and this year I made my dearest friends Christmas gifts. I love giving unexpected, funny, memorable and personal gifts. My attempt to recreate their beauty was thE hardest drawing challenge I'm ever attempted!
1)Heather Goldberg is a Jewelry/womenswear designer/artist and loves thug rap as much as I do. Checkout her beautifuuul jewelry here!!
2)Regina Yazdi is one of my favorite illustrators and, like me, was born with a pencil in her hand. Her work bembodies the past and the future of fashion illustration. I just realized how hard/fun it is to draw fellow illustrators.
3)Theo Moysis is a fresh faced fashion designer living in New York and is currently designing at Tommy (the new hipper subdivision of Tommy Hilfiger). Like me, he loves to hunt down/share new music.

Inspiration: Erika Stevenson

These days it seems like everyone has 'one of those cameras' with the vintage feel and the slightly saturated colors. Unlike a lot of the photographers on Flickr/Tumblr/blogs/everywhere online, Erika Stevenson's photographs seemed more like art than a just another beautiful/bland photograph. I love how some of the landscapes/compositions in her photographs look a bit one dimensional.
Checkout more of he work here.

Yelawolf

I've posted music videos by Yourstru.ly before and their latest interview/live performance with Yelawolf is amazing.  He talks a bit about how he finally decided to stand up, make his own luck and put his passions into action. love hearing these kinda stories and seeing creatives in action. Thanks again Yourstru.ly.
